I like this meeting and have a decent record here, usually from the earlier meetings at York you can work out course form and any track bias. This year I find that even more so important as the weather has remained fairly consistent and warm since May, so the ground is similar this week as it was in earlier festivals. When selecting our horses we will look for course form, mid to high draws and in form trainers.
13:50 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (Fillies' Group 2) 2YO only, 11 Runners, Class 1, 6f
We start day two with a hot two year old race and plenty in here unexposed with more to come. The Ed Walker yard have a good record in this and Royal Fixation looks a very solid favourite having finished a neck behind Venetian Dun who for me is one of the best 2 year olds around. In behind him that day was the juvenile Argentine Tango. She is a fantastic honest horse who always rides her race and finds place money on every start. She is heavily raced and could be that we’ve seen her ceiling whilst others in this can still be improving but I do like that she’s shown what she has and has the points on the board so to speak.
Pick – Royal Fixation Win 9/4
NB – Argentine Tango 16/1 ew
14:25 Harry's Half Million By Goffs (GBB Race) 2YO only, 21 Runners, Class 2, 6f
Day two is a difficult day and potentially the hardest at the Ebor meeting. With this race a perfect example. I’ve ruled out the favourite because the jockey is riding so badly (Hollie Doyle) and also the penalty puts a lot of weight against good rivals. Richard Hannon has won 5 of the last 10 renewals of this race, Sean Levey on Raakeb shows him as first string. The 6th place last time at Newbury is nothing special for me though. 6f was the making of Ardisia last time out and with top jockey Oisin Murphy onboard I think 14/1 is very generous. Rikki Tiki Tavi also comes here off the back of a win although at 5f and it is still unknown if 6f is what he wants. Song of the Clyde has close form behind Egoli who also beat Rikki Tiki Tavi so I can’t see much between these two today. Hard race but I’ve sided with Ardisia who seemd to like the 6f step up last time.
Pick Ardisia ew 16/1
15:00 Clipper Handicap (Heritage Handicap) 3YO plus, 17 Runners, Class 2, 7f 192y
A strong handicap here where it pays to follow course form. Course specialist Old Cock arrives here after a good 4th place behind Remmooz, that cam 2 months after winning at course and distance so will have needed that. Should be much fresher for today. Remmooz is a strong chance winning here last time and up only 4lb today. Short price but very interesting that 4lb could be achievable again. I’ll give a mention to La Trinidad at a big priced 28/1. He’s won here and loves York. Hasn’t won this year yet but could be rejuvenated at York.
Pick Old Cock ew 11/1
Won’t spend too much time on this one. They didn’t have a great day yesterday with favourites but Minnie Hauk should be too good for these.
Pick Minnie Hauk win 1/2
For me this is between the top two in the market who meet for the second time in a few weeks. Last time over 1m 2f Charlotte’s Web chased Rainbow’s Edge at York. The latter was staying on and this extra 1f could see the form reversed today.
Pick – Charlotte’s Web win 4/1
16:45 Mews Hotel Ossett EBF Stallions Nursery 2YO only, 18 Runners, Class 2, 7f
I have a fairly strong fancy for one in this race. Ballistic Missile at 12/1 comes here after having wind surgery before his last race. This yard won the race last year and jockey Kieran Shoemark won a similar handicap in the opener yesterday. Won well over 5f here at the Dante meeting before finishing down the field in the Coventry. Wind surgery seemed to bring improvement when 2nd last time.
Pick – Ballistic Missile 12/1 ew
17:20 British EBF Fillies' Handicap (Heritage Handicap) 3YO plus, 18 Runners, Class 2, 7f
